In the Monte Novo Estate there was a small area of old vineyard. The family´s sympathy for this activity, together with the existence of a good terroir, with favourable soils and sun exposure, led, in 2001, to the decision of expanding the area to the present 28 ha of new vineyard.

The choice of wine grape varieties was carefully made, selecting those that would thrive better in this Alto Alentejo site and from which it would be possible to obtain superior quality grapes, essential to premium wine making.

The main grape varieties selected were Aragonez and Syrah. Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon were also selected to obtain more complex wines.

Arinto and Antão Vaz were the white wine grape varieties chosen.

Throughout the whole process of setting up the new vineyards, the key issue was that a good wine starts in the vineyard, from the variety and clone selection to the use of the most up to date vine growing technology.

Climate and soil moisture monitoring systems, together with a drip irrigation system, allow an appropriate pest, diseases and water availability control. These precise viticultural technologies and practices are essential to achieve high quality standards.
